At the present time, the United States federal government retains title to roughly a quarter of the nation's land, including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and several hundred million miscellaneous acres. Managing these properties is expensive and often contentious, and few management decisions escape criticism. Some observers, however, argue that this criticism is misdirected, that the fundamental problem is collective ownership itself; the solution, therefore, would be a move toward privatization of such property. A free market, it is claimed, directs privately owned resources to their most productive uses, and privatizing public lands would create a free market for their services. This timely study critically examines these claims, interrogating the concept of productivity. Lehmann argues that there is no way of understanding "productive" so that greater productivity is at once desirable and a likely consequence of privatizing public lands or "marketizing" their management. The discussion is fully self-contained, with background chapters on federal lands and management agencies, economics, and ethics. An underappreciated gem.

Scott Lehmann's under-appreciated book is one of the best and clearest demonstrations that environmental philosophy can be clear, vibrant, relevant, and important. Lehmann carefully examines the case for privatization of public lands, and articulately argues that it's a bad idea. Since privatization proposals are still very much 'on the table' as policy options, the issue continues to be relevant and important. Several years after its publication, Lehmann's book continues to be the best work on the subject. Anyone seriously interested in environmental policy can't afford to overlook this excellent book.

Skip This! Still waiting for a LittleBits tutorial book

Summary: As a lover of Make Magazine, and a love/semi-hate relationship with littlebits, this book misses the mark. It reiterates everything that has been frustrating about littlebits. Littlebits are for kids, they need kidlike tutorials. Adults don't need a book to point them in the direction of the littlebits website. I reiterate the other reviewer, this is an advertisement for littlebits. Not for someone that currently owns them and is looking for basic knowldege and project tutorials.

In Depth: It explains the basics of each module (kind of on a level for 8 year olds, but written more for adults). That is okay, but I assume that they will then give me basic projects. There are less than 10 projects in the book, none of which are cool, and only half that are basic. After they describe the basic premise of the modules it then shows you a project where you use a laser cutter. Huh? If you don't know how these bits work, you do not own a laser cutter.

We own dozens of little bits, and the worst part about little bits is their project tutorials. Kids need to walk through some basic projects, and then use their creativity to make their own. Their website is terrible to search, and the tutorials are even worse. This book points you in the direction of their website for these projects. THERE ARE NO STEP BY STEP TUTORIALS IN THIS BOOK.

I had high hopes for this book and pre-ordered it. It would be a good guide for someone to create curriculum for teaching LittleBits, but there is almost nothing in the book that isn't already available on the LittleBits website. I was hoping for a book full of projects and creative ideas. I was very disappointed.

The title is misleading. In fact, this book has nothing to do about aircraft design. I estimate that 90% of the text is about aircraft performance and 10% is about statibility and control. There are only few pages at the end of the book that is about aircraft design. A better title would be Introduction to Aircraft Performance. If you are not convinced, just check the table of the content:

There is nothing wrong to write a book about aircraft performance but author and editors should be cautious when chosing a title.

Also, in the preface, the author states that this book is intented for student with no prerequistes in aerodynamics and propulsion. However, I am pretty sure that students without these prerequistes will not fully masteriese the text. Indeed, the coverage of aerodynamics and propulsion is very short and without some basic knowledge in aerodynamics its is difficult to fully understand the performance analysis of a aircraft. The author claims that the prerequistes delay the exposure of students to the reasons for configuration and performance of various types of aircraft. However, there are reasons why most engineering school have the practice to teach an aerodynamics and an propulsion course before a performance course. Its because student need some theoretical basis in order to understand aircraft performance.
