Not my typical selection...

If I hadn't been in India when this came up on the Kindle first list, I might have passed on Trail of Broken Wings. While on a vacation in India with my new fiance, I chose this title to fill the down time of travel and an unfortunate few days of "Delhi Belly." I had hoped to finish it on or flight home but I tore through the pages, unable to stop until I had seen this story through to the end.
What a heartbreaking and moving story! I don't usually settle on anything less than a gripping mystery or an epic fantasy saga, but I am so glad I did this time!
While detailing the horror and heartache suffered by victims of domestic violence (especially within the confines of tradition and custom) Badani also told a tale of forgiveness and healing. It is unfathomable to think that anyone could be whole again after suffering so greatly under the pretense of familial duty.
The chapters are broken up to convey the points of view or narrative of each of the three sisters and their mother. It was curious to me though, that Sonya and Trisha's accounts were told in first person POV, while an omniscient narrator told Marin's and Ranee's.
This story, while an unexpected choice, was a great one that I readily recommend to anyone, regardless of the pain of one's past or lack thereof. It is a cathartic story, a cautionary tale, and a powerful narrative on the human spirit.
We never know the burdens that others bear until they themselves trust another to help lighten their load.

Great look at the effects of domestic violence and the resilience of family with some cultural awareness

I am usually never one to dive into a Kindle first release the moment they come out, but the moment I read the description, I knew this was my pick. This story explores the effects of domestic violence and presents the story to you in bits and pieces. The mystery keeps this book a page turner and kept me awake all night. The style of the story reminds of me alot of "The Husband's Secret" and "Girl on the Train", both of which I loved. For me, being Indian myself, the family was immediately relatable and the cultural reference comforting and accurate but I think any family and especially someone that has sisters can relate to the family dynamics.
The book is not written in the most elegant of prose, and if you are one to get hung up on sentence structure and other issues, this might bother you. The story could have flowed a bit more easily but for a debut novel, the storyline and the emotion are there, and it is definately a worthwhile read.

~~Captivating/Emotional and Finally Finding the Light~~

This is a complex and captivating novel which captures the anxiety and heartache of a family trying to heal after years of burying secrets. Brent, the father lies in a coma and Ranee, the mother assembles the family in a hospital in California. Sonya, a talented photographer has been gone for years and returns with great reluctance to the family she left behind. Trisha and Marin are the other siblings.
The complex portion of this novel delves into the manner in which a person trusts others and the affect that childhood actions have on future lives. Is one able to depend on another for happiness after suffering for years? The strength that a human holds deep inside will rule over regrets and despair if one is able to trust and ultimately forgive the perpetrator. The question of ‘Why’ surfaces over and over again throughout the book.
To paraphrase a couple of integral messages in the book: The past doesn’t have power to determine the future and life is not what happens to you but what you make happen. One is able to finally find the light after much darkness with hope and strength of family ties..
This is an emotional and engrossing read. The mix of characters is outstanding, the plot was well written and the surprise at the end will make the reader say ‘wow’. The customs of the Indian people also contributed to this story immensely.
Most highly recommended for the complexity, the characters as well as an emotional and engrossing read.
