Fascinating journey!

John Sweeney uses his wit and incredibly descriptive writing style to describe his journey to Europe's last dictatorship. Not only does the reader get the feeling, through Sweeney's experience, of what is like to be there, but he or she also learns about the odd history and current political situation in Belarus - with President Lukashenka at the center of the story. A fascinating journey and a quick read, highly recommend for a rainy weekend!

Last Dictator of Europe?

A worthy topic but it reads like it was written in a hurry. It adds little to our knowledge and is more of a long article than a book. The author is a good writer and it is unfortunate that he didn't take the time to produce a more complete study, one that might have complemented the spate of new books on Belarus that have appeared over the past two years, including those of two of the author's compatriots. Andrew Wilson and Brian Bennett.
