About the Author
Rico Pfirstinger studied communications and has been working as journalist, publicist, and photographer since the mid-80s. He has written a number of books on topics as diverse as Adobe PageMaker and sled dogs, and produced a beautiful book of photographs titled Huskies in Action. He has spent time working as the head of a department with the German Burda-Publishing Company and served as chief editor for a winter sports website.
After eight years as a freelance film critic in Los Angeles, Rico now lives in Germany and devotes his time to digital photography and compact camera systems.

I like it !

I'm french speaking (Belgium), so I can not talk about how well this book is translated or not, like other reviews seem to explain.
It is a very nice book, I bought the Ipad version which is less than 10, and I have to say that although I master many of the features of the X-pro1,
but there are useful tips that were helpful to me when reading this book, and let's be honest, it's the price of a cinema ticket !
How many times didn't we spend 10 bucks for a bad movie and regret it afterwards ?
The book might not be essential for some people, but as a X-Pro1 lover, I had to have it, and "I love it" ! But, that's just my opinion.
And besides it's not too technical, and if some paragraphs seem difficult to some, there is no shame to try to elevate oneself and try
to go further in the knowledge of photography....

Outstanding source for info

Honestly, I purchased this book because it was the only one about the X-Pro1. I did however look at sample pages before doing so. I must say that this book rates right up at the top of my rating of all books I have read over the years. This book is written in a style that is VERY easy for me to read. I like it so much I actually purchased a Kindle copy so I could use it as a reference (that way I can have many books and apps with me wheen I travel and they will take up very little room). I have learned more about this camera from reading this book than I did by going over and over the manual. GREAT JOB Rico!

ALREADY OUT OF DATE: BASED ON FW 1.11

Having previously purchased the Rocky Nook guide to the Nikon D300--which I thought was the most informative camera guide I had ever read--I jumped in to pre-order the Kindle edition of this X-Pro 1 book before it was released. Now that I have it, I wish I had waited to read a few reviews.
First and foremost, the book is based on the author's experiences of the X-Pro 1 running firmware version 1.11, which was apparently the most current FW version when the book was written. But as any XP1 owner would tell you, the camera underwent a pretty dramatic transformation in overall handling and operational speed with the release of FW 2.0 back in mid-September of last year. I'm amazed that the book, especially at its thirty dollar list price, wasn't updated prior to its release later this month, to reflect the significant improvements made possible by this new firmware. The result is that you'll find yourself reading advice and opinions about the camera that may no longer be valid.
For example, manual focus and its use were completely transformed by FW 2.0, but you'll find no relevant info on how to get the most from it here. In a section about AF use in challenging low-light conditions, the author advises using the AF assist lamp and the smallest size AF rectangle. That's advice straight from the original Fuji manual. But if you read the current online forums devoted to this camera, you'd know that just the opposite approach is now more successful: turn off the AF assist lamp and use a larger size AF rectangle. That's exactly the kind of insider info, developed through much use of the camera, that I expect to find in a book like this, but what you read may no longer be accurate because it's out of date.
I don't want to suggest that it's all bad news: mostly, the overall controls and menus of the camera didn't change with FW 2.0, so if you view this book as an expanded edition of the XP1 manual, with better and more detailed explanations for each button and menu choice, then it could serve you well, especially with no real competition on bookshelves. But it seriously misses what it might have been, and for that I deduct two stars.
