Prerequisites for reading the book are the following. The reader is assumed to know elementary analysis as the subject is set forth, for example, in TOM M. ApOSTOL'S Mathematical Analysis [Addison-Wesley Publ. Co., Reading, Mass., 1957], or WALTER RUDIN'S Principles of M athe- nd matical Analysis [2 Ed., McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York, 1964].

Amy Greenberg (Ph.D., Harvard University) is a professor of American history and women’s studies at Pennsylvania State University. A historian of antebellum America, Dr. Greenberg has focused her research and teaching on the politics, culture and gender history of the era, as well the role of the U.S. in the world. She is the author of Manifest Manhood and the Antebellum American Empire and Cause for Alarm: The Volunteer Fire Department in the Nineteenth-Century City.

Pretty good so far

The amount of primary sources on here are the main chunk of the book. The beginning part of the book is why I wouldn't give it 5 stars. The brief summary of the history of Manifest Destiny in America is a real let down. I was expecting a lot more in terms of information and history on Manifest Destiny but the amount of primary sources more than made up for the disappointment.

It's a history book. Serves it's purpose for class; my biggest beef though is that there's no e-version. It's 2014 (almost 15) - this book was done just a few years ago. It's stupid that there's no option to download immediately... If you really need this book, you better hope that the supplier isn't out of stock.

Stone's Weekly and a congenital prober behind official facades, remains enormously relevant today, in an era of too much journalistic acquiescence. MacPherson (Long Time Passing) hasn't written a conventional biography——as her subject left no private papers—but has woven in a study of the press (especially establishmentarian Walter Lippmann) and "Stone's running commentary on twentieth-century America." A child of Jewish immigrants, Stone (born Isador Feinstein) was, according to a friend, driven by insecurity and curiosity. A newspaperman for decades, he became "an eclectic craftsman," with a reformist and intellectual bent; even at 19 he quit a job to chase the Sacco and Vanzetti execution. "Izzy," as he was called, emerges as a challenging, complex fellow, an ebullient workaholic adored by his wife. Columnist and reporter, on the left but a self-described nonconformist, Stone issued sound judgments on the Holocaust and the Cold War, yet, the author allows, could be too willing to give the Spanish Loyalists and the Soviets the benefit of the doubt. Inspiring story of a true journalist watchdog

I had been looking forward eagerly to All Governments Lie, Myra MacPherson's thorough study of I.F. Stone's work and times. I had a deep personal interest in the project and confess to being absolutely delighted with the results.

I mention a deep personal interest and the reasons for this are many. For starters: I am a contemporary and there aren't too many of us left. It is true that he was 10 years my senior but still we shared depression and war and cold war years. I can't say that we knew each other, although we did meet on a few widely scattered occasions, but I did attend his school, The University of Pennsylvania. There in his home town of Philadelphia, I moved in circles that included relatives and friends with whom he had grown up. That enables me to say that I had a good second hand acquaintance with him.

I introduce myself in this manner to justify the comments I am about to make about the book. I confine myself to just one area of the book's treatment of the life of the man the author calls "the rebel journalist". I felt warm satisfaction in the way she swept into the garbage pail the ludicrous charge that Stone was guilty of espionage for the Soviet Union. She is convincing on the subject and reminds us of what should put an end to this baseless gossip. The F.B.I. never found one shred of evidence, and it was not for lack of trying.

J. Edgar Hoover was a stubborn, determined man when he had a hated target in his sights. He despised Stone to the point where he had made up his mind to get rid of him. To him the Stone threat was in the same class as those of Martin Luther King and Albert Einstein and we recall the viciousness and relentlessness of his attempts to ruin them. On the matter of the espionage smear, I can state with warm satisfaction now, because of this book: "Case closed!"

On a related theme, Ms MacPherson demonstrates a level of insight and understanding not always displayed by writers discussing her book. She comprehends, as they do not, that one had to have lived through the epoch to realize how it was possible to have taken pro-Soviet stands in the 1930s and '40s. With the hind sight of this century one can sneer at one who was so blind as to be taken in by Joseph Stalin. But for one who lived through the period, and Ms. MacPherson did not, I am in a position to make some points on this.

Those of us who lived during those years with our eyes and ears open, were aware of the threat that soon developed into the nightmare of World War II. We saw in Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia and Hitler's various menacing moves what the world would be faced with if measures weren't taken. Yet it was only the Soviet representative at the League of Nations during the mid to late 30s, Maxim Litvinov, who stood up and made the much needed accusations and called for collective security. The Italian and German n delegations walked out and the representatives of the great democracies remained cowed and silent. Let me add to this the shameful memory of the Spanish Civil War and the so called Non-intervention Committee. Only The Soviet Union and Mexico came to the aid of the legitimately elected government of Republican Spain.

Many highly respected people wrote admiringly of the Soviet Union, from the muckraking journalist, Lincoln Steffens, to Beatrice and Sidney Webb to Ambassador Joseph E. Davies to the saintly Hewlett Johnson, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral.

If you weren't there then, it's easy to look back now and ask: "How could he not have known?" Well, Myra MacPherson wasn't there then, but she has the insight to reveal the situation that existed and to explain the way decent people lined up.

This book is a must reading for younger generations who know so little about these times.

You Don't Have to Agree with Him

With the hindsight of several decades, it is easy to poke holes in I.F. Stone's writings. Yes, his notion of combining a free society with socialism was utopian. Yes, his economic arguments tend to be wooly in the extreme. Yes, he was wrong in denying the Soviet connections of some of his communist friends. Stone's books stay fresh despite those mistakes because he was right about a lot: governments, racism, wars.

He was so right that what he says about the cold war and Korea and Vietnam provides insight into the wars America wages today. Beyond the light he sheds on specific events, Stone offers an alternative model of journalism. His journalism, based on a close reading of all sources, is independent of the powers that be. Today's news reporting is dominated by the hypocrisy of the "he said, she said" model: include a counter-quote and the story supposedly becomes neutral. Stone was not politically neutral, but he was independent and truthful. He did not regurgitate the received view. He would not have fallen for the addled rationales that skewed public opinion in favor of starting the war in Iraq.

MacPherson's biography is a great way to get to know the irrepressible, fiercely intelligent and marvelously funny Izzy--a man who retains his curiosity and innocence even as he fights against injustice and idiocy and is beset by malignant bureaucrats and scheming politicos. It's not about his private life, but the book does bring the man to life.

Through Stone, one understands American history with all its grandness and squalor, in ways rarely available from history books. MacPherson has done a service to the Republic in bringing together this mass of material and preserving the memory of an outstanding American. Anybody who cares about the country should read it.

A book for smart people!

I.F. Stone, a great reporter, told the truth to power without giving it a second thought. Would that the current crop of investigative reporters had done the same. This book, beautifully written by former reporter Myra MacPherson, through ten years of interviews and research, puts Stone in context to his times, and will make you wish there was such a person watching Washington today. Practical, helpful advice with a more edgy tone. Love it!

This book is called the Urban Monk. The author is going to be a little edgier and use that "S" word. This is not a book written for young adults or children, so the use of profanity and edgy talk is fine in this context. If this is something that will bother you, please consider this before purchasing. This book has a load of practical good advice for those looking to live a more focused, less stressful, purposeful, peaceful life while still living in a modern urban world of city traffic and carpools, deadlines, over-filled calendars, and the feeling of being pulled in every direction just making you feel like you're losing control of your life. This is not your typical touchy-feely book found in this genre. Dr. Shojai provides practical tips such as meditation, figuring out what your priorities are, Qi Gong exercises, etc, to help you reset your life and get back in control. When I read this book, I felt like Dr. Shojai knew exactly what kind of time and scheduling restraints I'm dealing with, which made me want to try his advice. So far, I have to say it's worked wonders!

Better than hiding in a monastery!

After seeing a presentation Pedram Shojai gave at a conference, I had to look further into his work. His book did not disappoint! Dr. Shojai gives practical suggestions for finding and enhancing your inner vitality here and now in the real world, rather than having to travel to the far east and live as a monk for a few years (as he did). I truly appreciate that he advocates using your energy and vitality to make the world a better place.

Dr. Shojai has online resources to augment the material in the book, too. I have found the guides, recipes, and videos very helpful in finding my "inner zen." I feel like I am truly on my way to becoming an Urban Monk, too, and I don't have to quit my day job to do it!

This has become one of my go to books that I will read and reference over and over again for years to come. It is chockfull of Eastern practices and information all geared toward reducing stress and cultivating quiet and space in your life. I absolutely love it! It's a great intro to various Eastern practices, such as Qigong, Tai Chi, Yin Yoga. It inspired me to delve deeper into those subjects as well as more of the spiritual aspects of Yoga.

A flawed masterpiece

Magnum Contact Sheets is truly a masterpiece in terms of content.

The reproductions of the photographs in this book are of outstanding quality. This is an iconic book that will be highly sought after in the future. I would expect prices to skyrocket once it is out of print.

In my opinion, this is a book that every serious photographer, student of photography and connoisseur of fine photography books should own.

And now for the bad news: Due to a combination of marginal binding strength by Thames & Hudson and improper packing for shipment by Amazon, I had to return the book repeatedly to get an undamaged and/or non-defective copy. When copy #4 arrived, I at long last had an acceptable copy of this outstanding book. There are two threads on this book and the trials and tribulations associated with it at L-Camera-Forum (Google it).

I would rate the book at five stars (or an "A") for content and quality of photographic reproduction. However, in terms of the binding I would have to rate it at two stars (or a "D").

It is truly unfortunate that the marginal binding has flawed an iconic book that is in all other ways a masterpiece.

A brilliant book I would recommend any aspiring photographer or photojournalist to have in their collection

A brilliant book I would recommend any aspiring photographer or photojournalist to have in their collection as it talks about not just the trials or work of the great ones before them, but it shows them how the photographers of the past had worked.

I particularly love this book as it shows how much the final printed out shoot differs from the ones shown in the contact sheet indicating that some degree of printing skills was involved to make the photo work very well. As well as that exposure is not always spot on when they took the photos in the hectic situation.

I also love the stories associated with each of the winning shots from each contact sheet taken over the years. Keep in mind, this isn't just for film enthusiast (but it helps to have a better understanding of the work presented here) as later chapters shows digital contact sheet as well.

A unique and extraordinary insight into the photojournalistic photographic process

This book represents a unique and extraordinary insight into the photojournalistic photographic process. Many famous images are represented here, but what makes them particularly valuable is you get to see the contact sheets as well as the stories behind the pictures. I know of no other book on photography that comes as close to this. Some examples that spring to mind are Ansel Adams - Making 40 Photographs, Michael Freeman's photo books, and most recently, those of Scott Kelby, all of which give you insights into technique and the photographer's mind. But none of these tap into the extraordinary resources captured in this book. My approach to reading and absorbing this substantial volume has been to look at the contact sheets first, to understand the material captured, and then see how your choices relate to those of the photographer. This in itself is a valuable learning experience, not diminished in any way by the clues contained on the contact sheet in the form of notations. This is one book that should be on the bookshelf of every serious student of photography.

Mark F. Grady is Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Law and Economics at the UCLA School of Law. He specializes in law and economics, torts, antitrust, and intellectual property. He received his A.B. degree summa cum laude in Economics and his J.D. from UCLA. Before beginning his academic career, Grady worked for the Federal Trade Commission, the US Senate Judiciary Committee, and American Management Systems. Francesco Parisi is Professor of Law and Director of the Law and Economics Program at George Mason University School of Law and Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Milan.
