The author also shares his practice of buying and selling stocks (alternate between buy and sell each month), and how he improves his investing practice. About the Author
TODD K. MOON is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Utah State University and a senior member of the IEEE. His research interests include application of mathematical principles to problems involving the transmission, extraction, modeling, compression or analysis of signals. He is the coauthor of a widely-adopted graduate-level textbook in signal processing and author of numerous articles and conference presentations, as well as a children's book on programming. He also consults widely for industry.

A very well written Introduction to Coding Theory

Error Correction Coding is very well written and easy to follow. Explanations are concise, and the book is filled with examples as well as coding assignments that really drive the principles home.

Best overall algorithm explanations I have seen yet...

This book does a good job at laying out algorithms in an fashion that is easy enough to understand that you can then implement in software. The code that comes with the book is also very helpful. Lots of functions and scripts implemented in both Matlab and C. So far it has served as a good reference.

This book has a stellar introduction to the topic of Error Correction Coding. The chapter flow is very nice and the programming labs are very instructive tutorials in learning the topic. The homework exercises are very well calculated in aiding in learning this interesting topic.

Great tool for learning Homeric Greek

John Jackson's parsed interlinear of the first book of the Iliad is extremely helpful. Clyde Phaar's introduction to Homeric Greek takes the student through the first book of the Iliad. Many use Phaar's book and, so, Jackson's book is complementary. The print is extremely clear, too, which really helps in scanning the text. The only thing I wish is that the English interlinear came first rather than the parsing. But one gets used this set up after a while.

Minor Issue

A great resource for Homeric Greek. Only one problem though. I have the kindle app for my Windows 10 PC, and it can't render Ancient Greek characters such as circumflex vowels and iota subscripts. I can still copy and paste things into MS Word, for example, and it'll come out right, though. They just need to come out with a Unicode font for the app.

Too far over the top to be credible

When CIA assassin Mitch Rapp murders a member of Saudi Arabia’s royal family, the ball is set in motion for revenge. But no ordinary professionals are qualified for this job, except perhaps for a married French couple, Louie and Claire, who have plenty of appropriate experience in this field. Their fee for such a service is in the millions of dollars but that’s pocket change for the Saudi.
Mitch Rapp is an elusive type of quarry but he has one rather public liability in the person of his wife, a beautiful woman known to millions as a news reporter on a major TV network. Let us now pause to think about the stress in this marriage when the wife worries constantly about the risks Mitch is taking while on the job and has a steadily increasing desire to start a family.
So how do Louie and Clare find Mitch? By tracking his beautiful wife, of course. Shootout follows shootout as the “bad guys” try to kill Mitch and he kills one attacker after the other with precision pistol shots through each attacker’s head. If you’ve ever read the feature of MAD comics called Spy vs. Spy you’ll quickly get the picture.
Mitch has another habit which I found particularly irritating: He calls the CIA Director by her first name and speaks to the President in a manner bordering on insubordination. About this time I thought of the book’s title being close to the trust bestowed on another government agent in Britain who has a “license to kill.” Sadly, Mitch Rapp is no James Bond.
I gave up on this book after reading about 3/4. I could have written the ending but I’d get the editor to scrub the earlier parts before it was published.

Yet another awesome novel by Flynn!

Been a Mitch Rapp fan since reading the first book a few months ago. Can't wait to get to the next novels!
Without giving the story away, all I can say is that I never saw some of these incidents coming! I really thought Flynn's character would start to take another turn, almost to the point of some office job this introducing a new hero. Not the case!!!
Not only in the life of Mitch Rapp the incidents throughout this novel effect many characters in various ways. Mitch's life is a roller coaster ride and continues as this novel progresses.
Again, there's little more to review without giving the story away so I will add that Mr. Flynn's writing, his attention to details, his knowledge of things within governments and powerful organizations cannot be mere speculation. He HAD to have some real-life people giving him stories because it's just too believable!
The action in this novel is fast making the book hard to put down. The storyline is great and the end leaves you wanting more!
Great read, excellent series and ordered the next novel by the time I read the last page of Consent To Kill.

A change for Mitch

Not your typical Mitch Rapp as he is the hunted instead of the hunter. Don't want to give away the plot or any surprises. This is different on many levels and we see a Mitch we don't often see. A personal side and glimpses into the man not often discussed. Mitch is still the same when he goes into action, never fear. There are just some things that affect him and makes him reflect. Some may criticize the book and find faults but we are going in a different direction for Mitch based on some events. Cant really go into those without giving things away.

Mitch reflects on his life and still answers some questions with his style of violence. The ending may be criticized by some but it is a chance for Mitch to be human and make a decision based on life events. Don't find fault with him for the decision he makes. Still the best series of novels in a long while and Mitch is Mitch for all who follow him. Don't hesitate to read this one

Very often its the first thing that tells you whether or not a film is worth giving a look; sometimes, it turns out to be considerably better than the film itself. VHS Video Cover Art: 1980s to Early 1990s

I think anyone growing up in the 80s will love this book. Well if you are a movie fan of course, but who isn't? It wasquite nice to browse through the pages and look at all the wonderful (and sometimes quite weird) covers. Mostly are these movies I have never seen, hell mostly never heard of and I thought I was a movie buff. But it was great to read through this book and I got a bit nostalgic. Just think it wasn't many years ago I had a collection of VHS now I just have a couple left...

Anyway it was a nice book, perfect if you are a movie buff that likes old movies and perhaps especially good for those that want to see more obscure movies. I added some screenshots to show of the pages look like.

Like A Fantastic Journey Through An Old Video Store

Though I really enjoyed this book, it should be mentioned that the VHS cover art depicted within is from the UK. Being from the US, I did not recognize most of the art so this was not the nostalgia jam I was looking forward to. Nevertheless, this book is so well put together with each page showing full front, back and spine of the covers. I really hope that someone makes a book featuring American VHS cover art using this same format. It's a fantastic journey through a library of exciting, fantastic and lurid films with box art so enticing you'll want to take them to the checkout counter and rent them today!

some of my happiest memories are looking over the boxes at the dollar ...

As a kid, some of my happiest memories are looking over the boxes at the dollar video store. The excitement and promise of untold horrors or great adventures, pulling me in, making it impossible not to rent anything with a badass cover. Luckily they had 5 movies for a dollar Tuesdays. Later I realized how many films I loved, not because they were good movies, but because of the package that surrounded it. So many childhood nightmares spawned from the cover art...years later as an adult I'd re-watch and realize the entire film was lit so poorly I couldn't even see the monster! Yet the art painted a picture that still haunts my dreams. A VHS Box cover, telling a story so insane and creative, it was often better than the movie. So the movies were dismissed, and the art sometimes lost. I still have my VHS collection, but this book goes way beyond that. Fellow monster kids, video hounds, anyone who wore their creature features guide to the binding...this is awesome. If you love movies, get this book. I first encountered Tom Hodge "The Dude" through his amazing hand drawn movie posters. His stuff stood out at a quality level that seems to be scarce these days in the poster world. Makes sense he would compile such an awesome volume that makes me feel like I'm back in the video store again, raiding the dusty shelves, finding secret gems. Red says check it out!

About the Author

Lynn Beighley is a fiction writer stuck in a technical book writer's body. Upon discovering that technical book writing actually paid real money, she learned to accept and enjoy it. After going back to school to get a Masters in Computer Science, she worked for the acronyms NRL and LANL. Then she discovered Flash, and wrote her first bestseller. A victim of bad timing, she moved to Silicon Valley just before the great crash. She spent several years working for Yahoo! and writing other books and training courses. Finally giving in to her creative writing bent, she moved to the New York area to get an MFA in Creative Writing. Her Head First-style thesis was delivered to a packed room of professors and fellow students. Best beginner's PHP + MySQL Book

I've purchased around 6 or 7 books on PHP (for beginners) and each book has a common pattern where i get to a certain point and nothing else makes sense. I put down that book and pick up the next and re-learn what a variable is and learn about associative arrays, then they jump into checking if GET variables are set, but i don't even know what they are yet??
Head First PHP & MySQL pulls you into the pool fully dressed and forces you to get typing in a way that no other book even comes close to. It's easy to sit back and write a bad review that there's mistakes, parts that are difficult to learn etc - but if you review this book relative to what is out there - the others just can't compete. Head First successfully attempts to deliver an extremely educational book while being fun and modernistic. It is made up of several long, hands-on php/ mysql tutorials that do a great job of showing you how to apply top to bottom php coding. For me, the most impressive thing about this book is it's attention to detail - on more than one occasion I've wondered why something was done in a certain way and I turn the page to find that the detail has been answered! This is what I think helps the book to distinguish itself as the best 'how-to PHP' guide on the market.
I strongly recommend this if you would like to learn PHP, however I would also strongly suggest that you buy yourself a beginner's PHP book to accompany it, that isn't tutorial based, such as PHP for Absolute Beginners (Expert's Voice in Open Source).
I'm mid-way through Head First PHP and stopped doing the tutorials just so i could write this review. In fact i found a free version of this book somewhere online and liked it so much that i went ahead and bought it on amazon because i felt the value I received was well worth the money.. plus it's like having a little PHP bible next to me:) Strongly recommended:)

A little less conversation, a little more action

That's what I would want from this book! It's definitely "over the top" in the fun department, even for a head first title, you can really see how the authors put some real talent and imagination to create the "case studies" for the code examples.. I just wish they had exercised the same level of talent and effort on the technical quality of the examples, which is unfortunately severely lacking, even for a beginner level text. There is way too little code, and the little that is present is way too simple and primitive. The end result is that this book reads like a very funny comic book with a little technical detail inside instead of what is really meant to be, a technical book with humour and creativity to make it more engaging. I think this has to do with the fact that both authors are more "creative types" than programmers at heart, so they naturally ended up concentrating on the side they care more about... overturning the rationale behind the head firts series. So.. a little less conversation, a little more action guys, or at least put as much action as conversation..
So if you're interested in checking out how much creativity and fun can be put into a programming book you might consider to give a look at this title, but for really learning to program in php, I would go somewhere else...
