but feel like I know her

It is an honor to write the first review. I have never met the author, but feel like I know her, through her online videos. Helen, if you happen to read this, I LOVE YOUR RECIPES!!!
To those who don't know about Helen, she has a website, (danangcuisine.com) and a youtube channel. The videos are very professionally made. If you enjoy Vietnamese food, and want to try making it at home, her videos are a must see. I very much enjoy Vietnamese food, and think it is healthy as well. Flavorful herbs and fresh fruits and veggies are a big part of the diet.
About the book, here are the things that were good about the book:
The cookbook was very well organized. Sections were appetizers, noodles, main dishes broken down into pork, chicken, seafood, etc... and then breads, then sweet breads. (As in dessert.) The recipe names are in English first, then the Vietnamese name of the dish underneath. There is always a brief description or comment by the author before the recipe begins. In the margin there is always a list of useful info:
Prep time---- ( the time to peel chop etc...)
Cook time---( the time on the stove or in the oven)
Amount of time the recipe should be ready.
What course this recipe is--- ( appetizer, noodle, main, etc...)
What region of Vietnam this recipe is from.
There are numerous photos of EVERY recipe. Not just the finished product, but step by step photos as you progress through the recipe. If that isn't enough help, every recipe also has an easy access bar code ( the square kind that a smart phone reads) and that will take you directly to a video demonstration on the net. If you downloaded the ebook, you get a link that takes you directly to the video. At the end of many recipes there is a frequently asked questions page. This is good to read before making the recipe, since it may help you avoid any pitfalls, or you are wondering why a certain step is necessary.
All of the recipes are in a table of contents in the front of the book. There is no index.
Now the negative, and this is only my opinion. Many people may not see this as a problem:
There are a some special ingredients needed for some of these recipes. But if you are wanting to make real ethnic food of any kind, this is no
surprise. If you live in a big city, you should be able to find it locally. If you live in the country, you can order online, or sub another similar
ingredient. The recipes Helen chose to put in this book are probably her most requested recipes. I was disappointed that she didn't include the recipe for Vietnamese beef jerky, (delicious and useful in other recipes). I was a little disappointed that there weren't any of the delicious salads in this book. Her website has some wonderful salads. ---These are minor faults, in my opinion.
So, if you are going to buy only one Vietnamese cookbook, this one has great recipes, quick links to videos demos, and is well organized and nicely photographed. (don't know if the binding will hold up. Cookbooks usually take a beating. To my pleasant surprise, this book was printed in Louisville, KY U.S.A. !!!) I am so glad that I now have dozens of these recipes all in one book, easy to access.
Helen, even though we have never met, if you are ever in Nashville, let me know, because I would love to cook with you!!!

BEST VIETNAMESE COOKBOOK EVER!!!!

I'm Vietnamese but grew up in America most of my life. I struggled to find someone who will give me clear and accurate directions to cook Vietnamese food ....until I found Helen's Recipes on youtube. She is FABULOUS!!!!! All recipes that I have tried of hers turned out beautifully and tastes delicious! It also is authentic....even my mother said I improved as a cook! With all that said, I highly recommend this cookbook. I have bought several Vietnamese cookbooks (in English and Vietnamese) but they have been collecting dust ever since I found Helen's Recipes. Thank you Helen! You are inspiring, beautiful, and genuine...and a down to earth, wonderful cook!

I love the QR code provided in the book for video ...

This book is what a cook interested in Vietnamese food should have. Although I am not a Vietnamese, I think my cooking is very Vietnamese thanks to Helen's recipes.
The book is very detailed regarding ingredients, measurements, and instructions. If further help is needed, a video for each recipe is available on you tube. Each video shows all steps and techniques needed for the particular recipe one needs. (Helen even shows possible failures when reproducing a recipe). I love the QR code provided in the book for video accessibility.
I wish I could comment more, but I have to continue on my Vietnamese cooking...bye bye

Public Opinion As Social Control

The spiral of silence is based on the model of public opinion as social control. The spiral of silence holds that social systems form consensus by threatening individuals with social isolation. Individuals scan their environment for present and future distributions of public opinion in order to see which have social approval and which lead to isolation. In other words, public opinion is nothing more than safe responses to controversial issues that are expressed in order to protect oneself from social rejection.
Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann's spiral of silence theory in essence posits that an individual's willingness to express his or her opinion is a function of how he or she perceives public opinion. The spiral of silence theory is very influential in that it has produced as much research and probably more controversy than any other recent theory in the communication and public opinion fields. Furthermore, most of those that support the theory and those that are critical of it agree that the theory is important because it is one of the first to link public opinion to the social context in which opinion evolves and because it presents an interdisciplinary approach for understanding public opinion dynamics.

Since 1994 he has served as Director of the Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences, a four-week summer residential enrichment program in science for talented high school students. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His interdisciplinary scholarly interests include statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, history and philosophy of science, especially scientific ethics, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has been writing and lecturing about ethics in science for more than ten years. He is coauthor, along with Donna W. Sherwood, of Writing Across the Chemistry Curriculum: An Instructor's Handbook, also published by Prentice Hall (2001).

As a child growing up during the coldest part of the Cold War and fascinated by science, I began to wonder about the scientists who created the terrible nuclear weapons that threatened to annihilate humanity. What did they think about the consequences of their work? In retrospect, this was the beginning of my interest in scientific ethics. In high school I discovered Jacob Bronowski's wonderful little book, Science and Human Values which helped me begin thinking about the question more systematically. Although I was a chemistry major in college, I took several philosophy courses, including ethics, and continued to read informally about the ethics of science. This the era of the Vietnam War, so ethical questions such as the morality of using herbicides, the infamous "Agent Orange," and napalm were part of the public discourse. There was much to consider.

As a graduate student I learned how to be a professional scientist, but the larger context of science was never far from my mind. At Yale auditing Martin Klein's courses in the history of science furthered my interest. As a young faculty member I focused on building a scientific career, but was finally able to put my interests in history and philosophy of science to use professionally at the University of Tennessee in 1988 when I taught a capstone course for senior chemistry majors that was supposed to explore the historical and cultural context of chemistry. In developing this course over seven years I began to introduce questions of scientific integrity. Ethical issues were in the news at the time, so the daily press and Science and Chemical and Engineering News provided plenty of material. Although the literature on biomedical ethics was emerging, there was little to be found on ethical questions in physical science. To help fill that gap, in 1993 (rev. 1995) I wrote a casebook, The Ethical Chemist, with the support of the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. This casebook has been available for purchase at cost from the Department of at the University of Tennessee. I have lost track of how many copies we have distributed, but it is certainly more than five hundred. but it is certainly more than five hundred.

Since 1995 I have been exploring questions of scientific and professional ethics in more detail, developing my thinking in a series of articles that have been published in a number of venues. In addition, several users of the casebook have suggested that it be revised and expanded for a larger audience. The original version was written for an audience of senior chemistry majors and beginning graduate students, but it has been used, with varying success, in other contexts including lower division undergraduate courses and corporate settings. In rereading the original rebook I realized that many things could have been done much better. Writing the book you have in hand has provided an opportunity to develop my ideas about professionalism and ethics in science more fully, to revise the cases and commentaries in The Ethical Chemist, and to add a number of new cases.

I have tried to write a self-contained introduction to professional ethics for both chemistry students and practicing chemists. It can also be used as a textbook for a course or seminar in scientific ethics and as an instructor resource. The individual cases can be used as prompts for class discussions or writing assignments in many of the usual courses in an undergraduate or graduate chemistry curriculum. The Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society has recently recommended that education in professional ethics be included in the undergraduate chemistry curriculum and has published suggestions for implementing this recommendation. This book provides adequate material for any of these possibilities. While it is written for chemists, the cases easily can be adapted for other sciences.

Many people have helped with this project. Over the years, I have been fortunate to have had a number of talented undergraduate research students working on it with me. The original version of The Ethical Chemist would not have been completed without the enthusiasm and hard work of Priscilla A. Frase. Kristy Carter wrote preliminary versions of several cases, and Sean, Seymore and Schylon Yates did important background research for that book. The present volume has benefitted from the excellent work of Michael Bleakley, Melinda Coker, Rachel Graves, Jennifer J. Rosenbaum, and especially Jason Johnson. Anne Moody of Truman State University contributed drafts of several new cases appropriate for use in lower-division chemistry courses. Great ethics book

Students in all disciplines need training in ethics. Apparently, using common sense in making ethical decisions doesn't work any more. Science has ethical issues, dealing most with honesty in research and acknowledging other people's work. This book goes through the principles of ethics; this gives a context, a background, to thinking logically in ethics. What registers most with students, though, are the case studies. They are thought provoking and engage the students with real questions to be analyzed. This is the perfect book for a seminar class or a module in a class almost anywhere in the curriculum.

A solid book for a beginner/intermediate learner in DEM

If you are new in the world of discrete and granular material, then you should consider yourself to purchase this book.

This book covers all the basic subject in the world of DEM with a lean and clear explanation, such as:
- DEM formulation and its contact law
- Various type of boundary condition
- Quantifying the stress, strain, and fabric of granular material

During the presentation of subject, it gives a lot of details to elucidate the complexity of many formulation, which is quite a surprise as compared to the other similar books in this field.

It cites also sufficient references in case of you need/want to dig further into the subject.
Even if it is arguably quite expensive, yet it is worth it.

Wonderfull!
This book saves your time instead of tracking all of the published papers in geomechanics and DEM. Although it hasn't any numerical examples, but each subject is repeated twice and trace so that it sticks in your mind. I highly recommend this book for beginners in DEM.

About the Author
Lee Hannah is Senior Researcher in Climate Change Biology the Betty and Gordon Moore Center for Science and Oceans at Conservation International (CI). Tracking with his interest in the role of climate change in conservation planning and methods of corridor design, he heads CI’s efforts to develop conservation responses to climate change. He works collaboratively with the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara to model climate impacts on species in California, and with the National Botanical Institute in Cape Town, South Africa to model biotic change resulting from global warming in biodiversity hot spots in that region. He has written on the global extent of wilderness and the role of communities in the management of protected areas.

This is a beautiful full-color book, one of the best I've seen for breadth of topics and ease of understanding. It's intended as an undergraduate textbook, but professionals or concerned citizens interested in biology would find it a useful and accessible introduction.

Recommended for undergraduate climate change and biology courses

This fully updated second edition is in full color. For reviews see the first edition, but buy this edition - it has more full-color figures and new sections, while retaining all the content of the first edition. New sections include the carbon cycle and ecosystem services, while all of the topics of the first edition - species range shifts, paleoecological change, ecosystem impacts, marine and freshwater change and modeling - are all here. Recommended for undergraduate climate change and biology courses. Some copies in an early print run had color issues, this is now corrected.

Malacologists are terrible people. The book could be a useful non-technical ...

i was interested mainly in fisheries topics and i was rather unsatisfied. There are some error e.g. a clam is assigned as calcite-shelled, but it' s aragonite, a bit different : Tapes or Ruditapes philippinarum (or semidecussatus). Malacologists are terrible people. The book could be a useful non-technical approach, on my opinion at least, and on fisheries topics
