A Hidden Gem.

This is such a rewarding book if you put in the time. I was using it for self study, mainly because I was struggling understanding the proofs in my CS algorithms text - I got frustrated simply skipping over the proofs, and decided to invest some time in the foundations - namely logic and proofs. Prof Campbell has done a fantastic job with this little book, it's opened up a whole new world for me personally - I don't have that "dread" when I see a proof in my other textbooks - I actually have gained a deeper understanding of subject matter, now that I am armed with these proof skills.

This book is much more clear than others I have read on proof writing. It is fairly small but it is concise and manages to include most of the important information.

Essentials of making your students' heads spin

This book is god awful when it comes to structure, variety, and explaining in a concise manner. Starting with structure, the book is very table and detail heavy. This makes for a frustrating combination because while details are typically appreciated especially in a statistics book, certain paragraphs will refer to tables that are sometimes a few pages over either because there is so much detail or so many damn tables. This involves flipping back and forth constantly between pages so you can figure out what the author is talking about and that makes studying this material absolutely tedious. As for variety, there is not much of a wide breadth of studies that make the book interesting. It deals with the Framington Heart Study heavily and little else. This may have its advantages insofar as its consistency keeps readers from getting confused but it makes for one of the most monotonous reads I have ever had in a textbook or any book for that matter. Finally, though I previously mentioned that details can be good for statistics books there is a point where too much detail can confuse the reader because it gives them too much to keep track of. That is certainly the case here and no additional favors are granted to this by the poor structure either. The only thing that honestly makes this book worth it is the online workbook which gives you a helpful hand in learning functions and statistical analysis in excel. Be warned though, because they put about a year and half limit as to how long you can access the workbook. This also means that if you want the most useful part of the textbook you pretty much have to buy a new copy out of sheer necessity. If your professor assigns this book, make sure you have lots of time to read it because its trifecta of unnecessary frustrations will take you a while to drudge through. I would recommend supplemental reading as well like that of Biostatistics: The Bare Essentials by Norman and Streiner. They actually manage to add humor to Biostatistics while avoiding the aforementioned problems. Only bad thing is that they don't use excel so you would still have to buy Sullivan's loathsome book.

A Very Good Book on a Very Difficult Subject

We had to use this textbook for my biostatistics class, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. I've taken a lot of science/statistics classes in the past, and do understand that many times statistic books can be somewhat difficult to comprehend. However, this is not the case with this book. The book was very well written, and easy to understand as long as you spent sufficient time to study and comprehend the material. Don't be fooled, biostatistics can be a very difficult subject to grasp (I spent HOURS studying), but this book does a very good job of explaining it as best as it can. Many of the 3- star ratings will be from those who are grading their review of the book based upon the difficulty of the subject, not on the content within the textbook.

The only chapter that I found to not be very helpful was a later chapter on multiple linear regression analysis. The online material here, helps you to understand much better and fill in the gaps that the physical textbook left out. Being in chapter 8, and having to refer back to the same example back in chapter 3 over and over again, can get kind of annoying as well, but aside from these two very minor issues (well, ok, 1 minor issue. I missed 4 questions on my final from the multiple linear regression analysis crahp. That needs to be fixed.) the textbook was very well written, gave clear examples, and was very fair in its review questions at the end of each chapter.

Narrative learning.

A lot of narrative examples with references to tables or examples several pages earlier make following the formula with the numerical definition difficult. I like the formula summaries and practice questions. I wish the author had more clearly identified each calculation within the formula as sometimes it is not clear how the value is attained. The use of many acronymes is also difficult to remember the full term for the new student. I learn best by reinforcement and it is time consuming to try to go back several pages to verify and recall what the abbreviation represents. I am using the text for an online only class so this could be a major culprit to difficulties in understanding elements within the book.

Professor Peter Abrahams has practised medicine for the last 30 years. The illustrative images alone make this a remarkable book

...and the diagrams/images aren't of the tiny, useless variety often found in texts that attempt to include a lot of diagrams or illustrations -- so many other books cram images on pages with seemingly little care, thought, or regard for how a reader or student would 'see' such images (well, how they would *try* to, anyway)... and especially if/when labelling multiple aspects of any such images.

This book, however, treats images almost as though they were an analogue to the text of 'large print' publications -- you can *see* what the image is actually *illustrating*, and it's such a breath of fresh air to encounter a book that does this at all, let alone without cluttering the pages with such images (which could then complicate the 'visual space', and subsequent 'readability' of any such images, let alone potentially 'get in the way of' the reader-based 'processing' of any accompanying text).

There is a reason that this book weighs over 4 pounds -- not only are there many pages, but the pages are not made of flimsy paper -- it's quality, thicker-than-often-encountered, 'good paper'... and this high quality paper also plays a role in how the colors of the illustrations and photos are rendered.

The concept, design, and execution of the composition and printing of this book are all of high quality, and result in this book being exceptional not only with respect to content, but with respect to the overall 'presentation' of the material, and especially the all-important illustrations.

The fact that there is explanatory text which also accompanies the incredible number of wonderful illustrations, let alone that so many physiological processes associated with "how the body works" are given their time in the spotlight (including something I would have loved reading about as an adolescent, after breaking a bone -- i.e. how the body repairs a bone), results in this book being one that I will not part with.

Being the science and human physiology 'student for life' that I am, I would have treasured having this book long ago, when embarking on my own attempts to research the how(s) and why(s) of various human anatomy, physiology, and medicine -based whatnot.

This is a great book, and I highly recommend it for anyone wishing to learn more about the human body, and human physiology -- or, as is the case for so many, for those wishing to learn more about any of various physical structures associated with a given medical condition.

As they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words", and the illustrations included in this book not only 'say' a lot, but are award-worthy, in my opinion. Additionally, they are accompanied by text that has been carefully written for a lay audience/readership.

An excellent anatomy and physiology book

This is an excellent anatomy and physiology book, written for a student and for anyone interested in how their body works. It is 512 pages long and is highly illustrated, containing anatomical drawings, x-rays and photographs that not only show the anatomical structures of the body, but also illustrate such things as dreams, medical examinations of the ear and taking a pulse. The anatomical structures are shown both as color drawings and in many cases also as x-rays. In addition, it also discusses things like how the kidneys work, the role of fat and its conversion into energy, how the lungs work and the circulation system in general. The anatomy is combined with the physiology, so the book shows the heart (with separate sections for the chambers and valves) and also how it beats (with separate sections for the conduction system, the cardiac cycle) and a section that puts this all together showing how the heart beats.

The drawings are in color and are highly informative and while nowhere as detailed as a medical school text, it is in my opinion more than adequate for the layman or for a lower level student (including those training to be a doctor's assistant or laboratory technician).

Please note - the same author has two books "Physiology" and "The Atlas of the Human Body", which are subsets of this book, i.e., together these two books make up "How the Body Works". "The Atlas of the Human body" contains chapters that divide the human body into sections, such as the head, neck, upper limbs abdomen, etc. and the very same sections appear, verbatim, in "How the Human Body Works", but in the latter these section are expanded somewhat. "Physiology" contains sections on subjects such as "How the body responds to exercise" or "How allergies occur", which are not included in "The Atlas of the Human Body", but appear verbatim in "How the Body Works".

Another Outstanding Book from Dr. Katherine van Wormer

I am quite familiar with Dr. van Wormer's work and have read other books she has written, as well as numerous articles in professional journals. Her current book, like her other works, is excecptional. What I really like about this book is the many definitions and examples of oppression, discrimination, injustice, and social justice. These examples are made more real with her personal disclosures as a young woman and as a professor in criminal justice and sharing poetry from her mother. She decribes issues related to all powerless and oppressed groups, including women, African Ameicans, Native Americans, Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexual Persons, and Latinos. I also like the model that she describes for conducting a policy analysis of unjust policies, and both professors and students in social welfare policy courses would find this model extremely helpful. She discusses the strength perspective and restoratice justice, both needed perspectives in the justice field. Last, within her appendix is the U N Declaration of Human Rights and the articles contained therein, which provides and outstanding of humans' rights in the United States and developing countries. This book brings not only a remarkable book for teaching in academia, but also for the general public who are interested in fully understanding oppression and discrimination.

Ok I'm biased because I pretty much love anything that Jenika writes

Ok I'm biased because I pretty much love anything that Jenika writes, but I l really did love this one. Jenika is slowly chipping away at my comfort reading zone. Just like she has made me a Grizzly fan, I am now a fan of apocalyptic stories. Imagine the world as we know it has ended and the few remaining humans are struggling to survive, trying to fight off the un-dead, meet their basics needs of food, water and shelter, all while defending themselves from the evils of some depraved un-infected men. Pretty grim setting, but through this dismal new world, Collin and Rachel manage to find each other and carve out a little bit of normalcy and beauty. They fulfill their basic human needs of companionship and human touch, forging a lasting relationship, always having each other's backs, and impossibly creating a little bit of a promising future for themselves. A lovely read, you won't be disappointed.

Finding love in Hell

Looking for a good read that features the end of civilization? Read book 2 from Jenika Snow Savages, "Raven's Hell". The flu vaccine was hailed as the best thing that ever happened, they found it cured cancer till those that had the shot became something undead. A little graphic in its descriptions so not for the weak stomach kind of person. But it really is a love story on how 2 people meet in desperate times to rebuild a life together. Loving the series, hope there is more.

Finding love and surviving the undead world!

I have not read many apocalyptic stories, but this story is surely at the top of my list. Raven’s Hell is only the second in the Savages series and you do not need to have read the first one to catch on as to what is going on, though there is a mention or two of the characters from the previous story.

The story had me hooked right from the beginning, we meet Rebecca and Collin and how they’ve managed to survive being in a world with the undead roaming around basically trying to get to you. Having to scavenge for bare necessities is the way of life now. Something clicks though when these two meet and they find how much they have been craving the feel of someone’s touch or being able to have a normal conversation. They forge a companionship and look out for each other while fulfilling each other’s needs.

Highly recommended story, great chemistry between the characters, the storyline just got better and better.
