About the Author
Kenneth R. Miller, a recipient of numerous awards for outstanding teaching, is a cell biologist, a professor of biology at Brown University, and the coauthor of widely used high school and college biology textbooks. In addition, he has written articles that have appeared in numerous scientific journals and magazines, including Nature, Scientific American, Cell, and Discover. He lives in Rehoboth, Massachussetts.

Balanced and thorough

We researched a number of Biology books for our sons' high school biology curriculum. We have found this course to be thorough and challenging, which was important to us. The authors have a great website with lots of supplements and additional information, including mini lectures for each chapter.

A mostly solid biology textbook, with minor flaws

We've been using this as a reference book for middle school homeschoolers and it is straight-forward and user-friendly for that purpose.
But, of course, it is not perfect. One flaw we discovered this week: on page 21 is a beautiful chart dividing life into eight levels of organization (molecules, cells, groups of cells, organism, population, community, ecosystem and biosphere). As I showed this to my sons, the 7th grader immediately piped up, "Where do biomes fit in?" We just studied biomes, so of course that was on his mind.
Hmm, I thought. He's right: why aren't biomes included? Of course this led to a discussion of where biomes should be inserted -- which was a good critical thinking activity -- but still.
Eventually we discovered a different 'levels of organization' chart in Chp. 3 ("The Biosphere") and this second chart DOES include biomes -- right where we had already figured out they should go -- but divides life into only six levels: individual, population, community, ecosytem, BIOME, biosphere. Really? They couldn't be consistent on something this basic? Inconsistencies like this are unnerving to first time learners. In the book's defense, the chart in Chp. 3 represents the levels of organization studied by ecologists, so it is understandable that molecules, cells, and groups of cells (tissues, organs and organ systems) would be omitted; i.e., an organism is the basic unit of life studied by an ecologist. Yet this does not explain the omission of biomes from the first chart.
Notice also that the terminology is slightly different: "organism" is now "individual," and to make things even more confusing, the text refers to the organism/individual level as "the species level." Of course it is the species level -- all three terms are accurate and essentially interchangeable -- but the constant changing of terms without explanation as to why is confusing to someone studying biology/ecology for the first time. Such casual use of inconsistent terminology will likely cause test anxiety for a student asked to fill in a blank 'levels of organization' chart -- what's the right answer for this level: organism, individual, or species? Just saying.

and it looks like it will be decently easy to follow along without ...

We homeschool, and this year my oldest is entering middle school (6th grade). After researching a number of grade-level appropriate textbooks, I selected this one for his intro to Biology. The text may be a little advanced for him to read, specifically - he does have dyslexia and a few other learning challenges - so I'll likely be reading it with him, but the material is well within his comprehension ability.
Flipping through the book, I appreciate the way it is set up, and it looks like it will be decently easy to follow along without needing too much supplemental material. The chapters aren't too terribly long, and each chapter provides an initial activity, vocabulary list, section reviews, experiment, study guide, end of chapter review, and quiz (test prep). Plenty of learning opportunities. There are 7 appendices, and the glossary is offered in both English and Spanish, followed by what looks like a comprehensive index.
There is even a brief (very brief) section covering the Mesozoic Era - this will make my son very happy, as he is unusually obsessed with dinosaurs.
So far, I am very pleased with the textbook, and it will certainly last quite some time. I'll be able to use it as the intro for all my kids, before having to get them more up-to-date textbooks for high school.
