Riveting, inspirational, page turning story, but.....

I have to admit, this was an interesting read. I was particularly intrigued by this story of faith because I felt I could relate to it in many ways, myself being raised in a church, leaving the faith in my late teens, living as an agnostic for a while and having my faith in Christ and the Bible restored, as well as dealing with spiritual abuse, anxiety, depression, and unanswered questions both before and after my conversion. A lot of it to this day. That being said, I give Mr. Backus my Amen for all he exposes about church abuse, dysfunctional Christian homes, and underlying problems that allow it to continue. Honestly, in my church experience both then and now I had never seen anything like that before. Particularly I agree with his views on sexuality in light of the Bible which he discusses in chapter 3, as well as his exposure of the "name it and claim it" Word-faith theology he critiques later on. Again, I give him my amen on our points of agreement.
That being said, I do not agree with many of the sweeping ways in which he characterizes various groups of Christians, often giving me the impression that all forms of church authority are false and corrupt. In the same way that many posted the phrase "not all cops are bad, not all black people are criminals, not all white people are racist" in light of the recent civil and political unrest the past year, I would say that not all Christians and pastors particularly who believe in certain objective truths about God are abusive or power hungry. And lest anyone think Im trying to say "not my church", that's really not the case - to a degree, yes, my church, and every church, and all believers - we are all sinners who fall short and need a savior, and were all "Lost Sheep" at one point or another. But that doesn't change the truth of the historic Gospel message that Paul preached of repentance and faith in Christ. I can understand the author's feelings about many of these people given his experience, but still I felt a sense of ad hominem and a mild sort of "intolerant-tolerance" if you will. Which leads to my main point of frustration with the book - it makes some pretty strong truth claims concerning God and the Bible, such as on page 259 he says, to the Lost Sheep: "You have been lied to about God. You have been lied to about the Bible and everything you think you know about Christianity" and earlier where he claims it is likely the message is not coming from God when people use Scripture to build a basis for their beliefs in a discussion (p. 187). Yet scripture and parables from the Bible are used in part to make the argumemt in the book, in particular that of the sheep in John chapter 10. In chapter 9, he describes God as unpredictable and unable to be truly understood, even agreeing that his theology might be off. To his credit he does say "The mystery is intentional in this book" (p.230).
However, if so, my opinion is that he should not be as quick to make some of the claims he does about God, the Bible, or churches. Personally as a former agnostic Im sure I've faced many of the difficult questions he has, and I still don't have all the answers nor do I believe I ever will concerning God or Scripture. However, I do believe there are certain truths God has revealed in Scripture concerning us, the world, and Himself, truths that have been preached and agreed on by many Christians throughout history. As CS Lewis famously said, "Faith is holding onto what your reason has accepted in spite of your changing moods."
All that being said, my conservative Evangelical faith may not have been rocked and turned on its head as the beginning of the book seemed to anticipate, but it was nevertheless a great read with good insights, and well worth the theological adventure. I wish the best to the author.
As a side note, I would also like to recommend the recently released book Doubting Toward Faith by Bobby Conway, as I believe it would be a good follow up to this book.

"Ransom" is All of Us in Our Hunger for Knowing God

Backus' book, "Lost Sheep", challenges traditional Christian thought on how people are cared for by today's churches. Through telling of his own spiritual struggles -- in conjunction with his association with various congregations -- Ransom illuminates many of the methods and programs of congregations which miss (or drive away) those who are seeking God in the midst of serious sociological and psychological issues. The author is painfully open about the dysfunctional environments of home, religious schools and congregations in light of the hindrances they placed in his coming to know God -- and how God overcame them all in His "search" for Ransom.
"Lost Sheep" is an excellent account of how God in fact, by grace, DID lead the author to where he stands today -- and that the "journey" took a path this young man "did not know". Throughout this spiritual account, in many places along his journey, two things were obvious: (1) Ransom was completely in the Hands of God's grace, and (2) he was usually unaware of it! But this is so true in all our lives!
This book stands in need of some good editing... Those who are grammarians at heart need to brace themselves for the book's "fails" in terms of punctuation, some spelling, and some repetitive phrases which are old-fashioned (e.g., "dear reader"). But at the same time, these writing style errors lend to the story a sense of rugged reality. These are the words of a "real" person -- unadorned, unpolished, and often blunt. And therefore powerful.
In the contemporary church at large, there are many movements (such as "the Emerging Chruch", "home churches", "simple church", etc.) which struggle with an overwhelmingly common sense that "church as usual" is Missing Something Vital. The story Ransom tells is worthwhile for people who are currently uncomfortable with their understanding of God and the (visible) church -- especially if they're wondering if they "belong" in a congregation or should try something else. I don't think all his readers will automatically assume they should leave a traditional church or that they should stay in one, either.
In addition, throughout his story, Ransom shares dozens of profound, spiritual understandings -- chapter after chapter! As a Believer in Christ, Ransom has learned much from being "schooled at the Master's feet". I think anyone who wants to know God better could seriously benefit by reading "Lost Sheep".

Autobiography on Abuse to Wholeness

Ransom Backus chronicles his history of abuse to healing in this autobiography.
This is an engaging read that details how he went through a tough childhood and religious addiction to a place of trust in Christ and to a healthier marriage.
It is a powerful story that holds the reader's interest more than countless biographies that publishers would dare not touch.
Some have critiqued its need of editing and use of writing cliches but these do not take away from the story or its down to earth, no B.S. approach. Few people would be able to capture what God has done through the whole of their lives as Ransom has done through his.
A person who is sick and takes medicine that they crave and then experiences different results will rave about the remedy. It is good to remember one person's medicine is another person's poison. Not all religious institutions can be characterized as those in Ransom's past. That is not to defend them. Ransom at times veers towards a universal characterization of ministries that do not universally apply, and not all will find the alternatives he suggests to be as whole as he has. This is best taken as one man's story, though it undoubtedly will connect with many people who have experienced emotional and spiritual abuse.
