Story Is Dead, Long Live Story
As far as I'm concerned, storytelling in music is about over. Yes, it still pops up every now and then in some country songs or your latest folk hit, but overall, songwriters are moving away from telling fully fleshed-out stories through their songs.
This in turn means one very important aspect of songwriting just falls by the wayside: dramaturgy. What storytelling did for centuries (going all the way back to bards) is provide a reason for listening to the whole song: If you wanna know what happens to Georgie, you have to keep listening. Every songwriter knows: Give the audience a good story and they'll stick around.
Now look at the following songs:

This book from Friedemann Findeisen is great for songwriters and mixers who want to reflect on their tracks and mixing, with the song of keeping the interest of the listener throughout the entire song. It has a substantial number of practical tips and ideas about how to hook listeners from start to finish and illustrates that with a huge amount of references to specific sections of well-known hit songs. I feel it gives the reader new ideas and food for thought on things to try in writing, recording and mixing pop songs. Besides going into detail on the tension curve of the overall musical arrangement of a song the book contains chapters about how the separate instruments (like drums, guitar, bass and vocals) can be used effectively in creating more tension and excitement in the music. It also has a chapter about the do and dont's of writing lyrics, which I thought was very good.

Are you sure your songs couldn't a bit more.. dangerous?

If you are interested in writing and composing songs - which you can stand behind - look no further. This is a book for songwriting in the 21st century. Things come together, there will be many 'aha!' lightbulb moments, whether 'so *that's* what I did right!' or 'so *that's* what I was doing wrong this whole time!' This is an instructional course, and Findeisen is an excellent guide. He regularly makes and uploads videos on songwriting, I'm in the middle of a 40 minute interview he does with a Scandinavian songwriter at the moment. The author was even kind enough to accept my friend request on social media, and my confidence in my own music is getting ever closer to where I want it to be. Get it, you won't be disappointed. -Tom L
