About the Author
Peter Zarrow is a professor in the Department of History, University of Connecticut, where he focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of modern China, and an adjunct research fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. His 2012 work, After Empire: The Conceptual Transformation of the Chinese State, 1885-1924, won the First Scholarly Monograph Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica. He has been a visiting scholar at the British Academy, L'�cole des hautes �tudes en sciences sociales, and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and served as Hu Shi Memorial Chair Professor (Academia Sinica) in 2013.

Kay A. Robbins and Steven Robbins received doctoral degrees from MITand are on the faculty in the Department of Computer Science at theUniversity of Texas at San Antonio.

It's a lot more than just concurrency - it's the best introduction to C i've seen.

This is an awesome book. You'll have to be patient when going through it. And you'll learn a lot if you follow along with the examples and make everything work. It took me probably 6 hours just to get through chapter 2 - not because I can't read, but because I'm paying attention to every little detail, and making sure I learn what's going on.

The other thing that came as a big surprise, was that this is the best introduction to C i've come across. I've read quite a few books on C. Generally, I get through these other books on C - I get the syntax and pointers, and headers, etc. What I can never get through in these other C books, is that they use Math for all the examples. Which bores me, and sometimes frustrates me - because what I want to do with systems programming is not math - that's just me.

Of all the C books I've read, this one, and "C - A Reference Manual 5th Edition" are the best C books.

One pitfall in the book, is that with most of the examples, the conditionals to check pointers, and some other conditionals are somewhat amateur looking (that's just me). For example, in chapter 2, the "listlib.c" file has tons of conditionals like this:

list_t **newptrs;
if(headptr == NULL)
{
errno = EINVAL;
return -1;
}

That started to confuse me, why not just write:

list_t **newptrs;
if(!headptr)
{
errno = EINVAL;
return -1;
}

Which is ok. So there are many times where it seems the author is either purposefully writing conditionals to be verbose for readers, or doesn't know how to simplify with "not" flips.

Another example:

if(ptr != NULL)

can be simplified to:
if(ptr)

Other than those small things, this book is great.

EDIT: One other thing that's slightly annoying.

The authors like to put all of their code in conditionals. Like this:

if ((sigemptyset(&twosigs) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGINT) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGQUIT) == -1)) perror("Failed to set up signal mask");

For me that's ok in only a few places. They do it everywhere and it's really annoying. Maybe they did it just to save space in the book?

Excellent starting ground to do Unix Programming

I used this book to start to learn from scratch how to programming Unix. This book is self-contained,concise and easy to read. FYI, it is very readable and not dry. There's a number of good diagrams, for example,illustrating file descriptors allocations and the effects of system calls like dup2, etc. The authors uses short code snipplet to illustrate how to use a particular system calls, which I think is rather neat. A number of "projects" very quickly help reader to expand their skill level. Of interest is also a project on distributed "Richard" and "Linda" , the forerunner of Sun's JINI. The authors could have expanded this book another 100 pages and make it a companion to Steven's "Advanced Unix System Programming". I strongly recommend this book to beginners, intermediate Unix Programmers.

It really is a very good book.

The best part is the code examples. Neither did I know C , nor I knew Unix before I took this grad level systems programming course. It was a sort of painful for me to muddle thru that class. But I got thru it. Most importantly, I learned a lot about C, systems programming and Unix from the code examples. You read the authors explanation on some topic. You perhaps won't understand what is going on immediately. But You will after you have read the code. I enjoyed reading it. This is a very well organized textbook. It is a good read for people who have some background in C or other languages and want to know systems programming.
However, you should combine it with advanced programming in the UNIX Environment by W.richard Stevens if you are an ambitious UNIX-geek-wannabe.
Advanced programming in the UNIX Environment by W.richard Stevens is a bit dated. But it still complements this book quite a bit.

Dr. Tisdale is currently President-Elect of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP).��Douglas A. Miller, Pharm.D.�Dr.�Miller is a professor at the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Detroit, where he teaches courses dealing with professional practice and patient care. He earned his BS in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and his Pharm.D. from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. His pharmacy experience includes practice in community, long term care and hospital settings. For more than 20 years, he led a team that conceptualized and implemented innovative clinical pharmacy services at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital.�Dr. Miller served as a member of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy for 11 years including two terms as board chair. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Pharmacists Association and the boards of both the Michigan Pharmacists Association and the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He is the recipient of several awards and honors including the Annual Alumni Award of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and the Distinguished Alumni Award of the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, the Pharmacist of the Year Award of the Michigan Pharmacists Association, and awards from both ASHP and APhA for outstanding practice in hospital pharmacy. In 1990, 1991, 1995, 2004, and 2007 he was named "Teacher of the Year"�at the�Wayne State University Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.Dr. Miller is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association.

It's free, what are you waiting for?

Ok for this book the title is literal. You get just a touch or glimpse of the story. It is a compilation of glimpses by some of what I would classify as the best authors out there right now. How can you go wrong with names like Glines, Hoover, and Mcguire, just to name a few.

I'm not sure whom I would recommend this book to. Perhaps someone who isn't sure what they want to read next or someone who simply loves what these authors have done so far and are simply anxious to get a little inside track to what is coming. I fall in the latter category myself.

I had the pleasure of reading about half of these five star reads in their entirety already. Now, after reading the aptly named, "Just A Touch", I know I have to read the rest of the books now too. The ones on my Kindle Wish List already have been bumped up to high priority reads. The few that weren't on the list now have been added! Anthony di Mari: Anthony Di Mari is an adjunct professor at Northeastern University’s School of Architecture where he teaches first year architecture studios and advanced representation. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies from Holy Cross before completing a Master’s degree in Architecture at the Graduate School of Design (GSD) at Harvard University. Anthony’s competition work has been featured online through Inhabitat, Scientific
American, CNN, and shiftBoston. His fabrication projects have been featured in exhibitions focused on the design process including Matter: design processes at the Bakery Design Collective in San Diego, California, and furniture featured at GreenHomeNYC’s The new New York event. His professional experience in the field of architecture includes collaborations with Peter Eisenman, Rick Joy Architects, RCR Arquitectes, and Studio Luz. His studio is located in Boston, Massachusetts.

This second book in the series, and hope they will make a third one. The book does an excellent job of explaining different design themes and builds up on the first conditional design book. Excellent size that fits in any students pocket, and can always be scanned to spark ideas, or tackle design problems.

Adequate as a very basic introduction

Meh. I like the emphasis on design as an action (a 'verb' instead of a 'noun'), but this volume places slick design and renderings ahead of clarity and comprehensive treatment of the development of form and massing. Very limited in scope, dealing only with rectilinear forms (boxes and rectangles); misses a huge opportunity to explore other geometries and operations (perhaps there's another volume in the works).

Works fairly well as a rudimentary introduction for design students, but feels like a modest update to Peter Eisenman's '9-square' problem.
