A Must Read For Serious Readers

My overall 2nd favorite book and -by far -favorite science fiction story. This book and the entire original 6-novel story taught me more about politics, ecology, psychology and the human condition than all of my schooling combined. A must read for anyone that seeks insight into why we do the things we do and how to really read others and sharply tune-in to what's going on around you, but it'll take concentrated reading and possibly a re-read or two for it to truly sink in. Admittedly, it is a typical sci-fi epic as far as "boy struggles, boy overcomes, boy rules" -but you have to take in mind the time of its writing: the late sixties. Besides, there are so many other strong characters that I find myself identifying with a new one on each re-read -and the plot twists and possible future for mankind can be mind-bending for new readers. I recommend this book for any and all book lovers, whether it's mystery, romance, science, technology, psychology, ecology, social, politics, hero or epic fantasy as your favorite genre, this novel touches on it all. Pity they've never been able to make a series of movies to give it justice.

Each time I read Dune I become richer

I'm not actually sure how many times I've read Dune; every decade maybe. It is extraordinary how each time I do it speaks of something different to me as I age. My first read as a young teen in the '70s was overwhelming with words and scenes I'd never experienced before. It was magical and one of the mind expanding elements of the New Age. Now, in 2017, it comes full circle to the fears of environmental impact and government off the beam. I've aged, and the story still offers an amazingly lucid reflection of reality. I highly recommend it across anyone's life span.

What can i say that hasn't been said before? Here it is ...

This book has been reviewed more than 1,667 times on Amazon, 1998 of those are five star ratings. So you know it's a great book, but why it's great may escape you from the reviews I read. I bought the book having heard it's a classic, but knowing absolutely nothing about it, and the reviews I read didn't make me more inclined to read it. The author is obviously a genius, I mean a calculus and physics kind of genius, who figured out what the magnetic draw of a charismatic president could do to a country more than 60 years ago. He dropped hundreds of spectacular gems you probably never even considered before. Things that could change the way you think about life. In addition, the story moves along more rapidly than most, and moves from step to step in a deeply coherent manner that was being set up for chapters but escaped your notice until it unfolded. Sometimes I was startled by the rapidness. All 900 pages of it. The other end of the universe from Stephenson or Mieville. This is the story of a 15 year old who suffered defeat and hid in the desert until he became the ultimate ruler and foundation of a new religion. Great plot, great characterization, great pace. Very little about the military stuff, a great deal about the other stuff. Great everything. Perhaps my favorite book. A fabulous read that will stick with you long after you put the book down.

As revealing as Friday Night Lights

I am not normally one who pays much attention to the Author’s Notes intro, yet this one grabbed me and pulled me into the book right away. At that point I was hooked, and did not want to put the book down. While I like and appreciate college football, I would not consider myself a devotee. Yet this story captivated me. It brought to life for me an era that I knew virtually nothing about. I was fascinated with the path of football from something that only slightly resembled the present-day game into what we now consider to be football. The insight into characters that I had heard of (such as Walter Camp and Amos Alonzo Stagg) as well as ones that I had never heard of (such as Pat O’Dea) was extremely revealing. The background of the founding of the University of Chicago was fascinating. I could go on and on with the stories and wonderful information that I gleaned from this book. It just made me hungry for more.

I was quite impressed by the amount and thoroughness of the research that must have gone into this book. Yet it amazes me how well written it is. It is footnoted like a scholarly paper (probably better than most), yet it reads like a well-written novel. Mr. Revsine has pulled off a significant literary accomplishment. Every paragraph was packed with insight, information, and/or quotes. Yet I never felt as if I was reading a collection of facts. I was reading a story that I was thoroughly enjoying. Even his little side jaunts into such areas as the background of Yellow Journalism and Muckraking were extremely informative, and seemed to help, rather than hinder, the flow of the story.

As you can tell from my other reviews and ratings, I am not one to heap false praise upon a book. Yet, I consider this to be one of the best-written books that I have ever read. I didn't have to “work” my way through the information that it presented. Rather the information flowed to me as I enjoyed reading it. If I had to raise a complaint, it would be that there wasn't enough. For example, I only got a little taste of the background of the Rose Bowl and insight into Southern football. I would have loved to have more of that, especially if it was as well-written and thoroughly researched as what was included.

Any fan of football should love this book, and even its detractors can learn from what is presented here. The complaints about football today, especially college football, are not anything new. It is amazing how, as Mr. Revsine quotes, “There is nothing new under the sun.”

I recommend this book very highly

I have been working in sports as a writer, author and broadcaster for more than two decades now (but who's counting), and I have rarely come across a piece of work as impressive and entertaining as this. Opening Kickoff had me riveted from the very first page. Dave Revsine's research was thorough, his writing crisp, his narrative compelling. He also explains how all these problems that seem new in college sports actually began at the beginning. I recommend this book very highly!

The College Football You Never Knew

The College Football that you never knew! Well researched and well written history of the origins of the game from its beginning as "informal, gentlemanly pursuit between students of rival universities" thru its quick and surprising rise to "thrilling nationwide spectacle." These are definitely tales you have never heard, and they are intelligently put into the context of other events also occurring at the turn of the century. Don's skip the preface, epilogue or afterword either as they both also added to the overall package for this SEC fan.

We hope you enjoy reading and learning from this book as much as we enjoyed writing it. Coding with JavaScript For Dummies is the result of hundreds of hours of writing chapters, drinking coffee, reading chapters, discussing chapters, rewriting chapters, and thinking like JavaScript beginners.

We used an extreme form of collaboration throughout the process of writing this book. Each word and sentence was actually signed off on (several times) and typed by both of us. As a result, no single page of the book can be said to have been written by Chris or by Eva. This is different from every other book with co-authors that we're aware of -- usually, chapters are divided between authors and the reader may notice a change in voice at some point in the book. Not here.

Even the screenshots were shot by both of us. You may notice that some of the screenshots were done on a Mac (by Chris) and some were done using Windows (by Eva).

We strongly believe that our collaboration made us both better writers and resulted in a better book than if either of us had written it by ourselves.

Great for Beginners!!

Well written and easy to understand --finally!! Coding with JavaScript for Dummies has been an immense help for me getting started with the basics. Used as both a training guide and reference, I am finally starting to get a good foothold of understanding and the confidence to keep going --things many rushed online courses were not able to provide. Extremely informative, challenging, and often times humorous --this book is highly recommended.

Contains many typos and syntactical inconsistencies that take away from learning JavaScript.

Even the first example you're supposed to type in to try contains a typo, which stumped me for a good ten minutes before I googled to see if the code was right, leading me to a website created by the authors that tells you what some of the typos are, and what the code is actually supposed to be.

About the Author

Seth Leitman is currently President and Managing Member of The Green Living Guy which talks about organic, natural, and sustainable products for business and home use (from energy-efficient bulbs to electric vehicle conversion referrals). Previously, he worked for the New York State Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, where he helped develop, market, and manage electric and hybrid vehicle programs serving New York State and the New York metropolitan area.

Bob Brant wrote the first edition of Build Your Own Electric Vehicle, published in 1993, and some might say he was ahead of his time in his passion to convert to electric. While there have obviously been updates and technological advances since that time, many of the concepts in that first book are still in use today. Bob grew up in New York City, got a BSEE, and worked on NASA projects such as Apollo, Lunar Excursion Module, and the Earth Resources Technology Satellite. He then went on to get an MSEE and MBA, and worked for a company that worked on the Lunar Rover. Bob was always fascinated with every electric vehicle breakthrough, was convinced of its personal and environmental benefits, and was curious why stronger steps had not been taken to make electric vehicles a reality.

Needs some editing but still recommended

About halfway through the book I wanted to stop reading because it became so repetitious, it was really beating me over the head with factoids about how good electric vehicles are, I know they are, that's why I bought the book, you don't need to sell me on the idea of electric cars anymore. You could have 1 chapter explaining the social, economic, environmental benefits of electric car ownership and then never say it again, ever, seriously:-)

The Tesla stuff was all over the place too, consolidate that or use that as a fixed reference for the various topics like types of battery's, here's what Tesla uses, types of transmissions, here's what Tesla uses...

I pushed through and was rewarded with the last half which was much more direct and explained actually building an electric vehicle. The AC vs DC information was well handled as well as how to handle the transmission in a electric conversion project, for those sections alone I would recommend this book.

Way too much print and paper devoted to convinsing you to build an electric car

About half the book is repetitious diatribe convincing you that electric cars are the best thing since sliced bread and Gas motored cars stink.

Now given that you are reading this when you spent money to figure out How to build an electric car, I found it a bit of a let down and felt I really didn't get my money's worth.

Another large portion of the book sings the praises of commercially built electric cars particularly the Tesla.

Again, i bought a book to learn how to build an electric car, not how to buy one or which one to buy...

A large part of the remainder of the book Using lots of formulas that help you determine exactly what size motor you need etc. From what I have done for research already it seems to me that if you tell a supplier of motors and hardware what you are planning on converting and what sort of performance you want they will pretty much nail down the options to fill the bill.

the books jumps form subject to subject and is quite disjointed. Logical flow is very much lacking.

Another large portion of the book speaks in technogeek language that is likely only to be understood by someone already immersed in electric car conversions and it does not take time to explain the terms.

All in all I was underwhelmed on the Kindle purchase. Fortunately Amazon.com has an excellent return policy and customer service and allowed me to return the book for a refund of the price paid.
