Mixed reviews for mixed subject matters

When I purchased this book, it was for the purpose of understanding "nanpa", maybe with tips but certainly with some amount of cultural exploration as it relates to girl-hunting. While the author only explicitly states it a few times, he does exactly that, starting from the traditional Foreigner mystique and moving on to Japan-specific scenarios. In this aspect, I can find no fault in his writings.

However, I do have something of an issue with the rest of the book. Though all the important bits are present, as I mentioned, they are a very small part of the book, and the rest is dedicated to his personal interactions with the culture and how he adapted, or didn't. While all of these anecdotes, combined, give some clues as to the way culture in Japan differs so greatly from our own, it is also filled with many details that are, frankly, too personal for me to find any interest in. The musings and descriptions of the exotic and beautiful women go on at such length that it was a serious detraction for me, as an ordinary reader and as someone interested in other cultures.

Overall, I certainly came away knowing and understanding more than before I read this book, but I could have happily not read several chapters and be just as knowledgeable.

5 Stars If You Know What You Are Purchasing

If you expect nothing but a detailed instructional book on picking up Japanese girls, you'll be a little disappointed. Everything you need to know he covers in pretty much the first chapter. This is a good thing. Most pickup books fall into two categories: 1.) motivation or 2.) detailed step-by-step guides that are impossible to remember/implement. With it being short (later chapters do explain different insights of nanpa), you have a guide that is simple to remember yet powerful.

He says he doesn't see nanpa working eith western girls (specifically the ones in the UK). I can't speak about the UK, but in my experience things I've done in the past that were very similar to the techniques he describes worked in the US. Of course, there are a lot of different cultures and attitudes in the United States. So where you live in the US might make a big difference.

The rest of the book is mostly detailed stories about his nanpa experiences. I'm not big into reading novels (fiction or not), but I did read this entire book and enjoyed it.

He does get existential/philosophical on you. This is a good thing because you'll become nothing but a scumbag if you stay in this world.

Overall, I enjoyed his writing and the strategy he uses is very casual and easy to do. Worth the purchase.

Fun read but lacks some things

I really liked then short stories that the author wrote into the book.
The only thing I found was a lack of nanpa theory, for the Japanese perspective.
He would mention how "his nanpa master taught him certain things , but it was very brief and short.
I would have loved a chapter or something talking more about this master he spoke of.
Other than that the stories were fun and entertaining.

Stunning

If anyone were to try and describe this book as a bore, I couldn't conceive any reason why. This book held me completely spellbound. The book starts off with Joe experiencing these unusual chain of events on the one year anniversary of his wife and childrens plane crash. As the days progresses he comes into contact with families who had also lost their loved ones on this devestating flight, but as soon as he does come into contact with them, they begin to parish themselves due to unexplainable suicide and deaths. So what secrets does this "Sole Survivor" have? And will Joe feel these answers justify his loss? I know this book kept me captivated right down to the last page, and Joe's last decision.

I recently picked up this book for four reasons:

1. It was on sale

2. I'd just finished reading "The Husband"

3. I needed light entertainment for a long flight

4. I was in a hurry and it was conveniently stacked near to the register

It was only during the boarding process that I glanced at the back cover, and discovered my faux pas, which did not escape the notice of a literate cabin attendant who gave me "the look".

Okay, maybe a novel about a plane crash is not ideal for a five hour flight, but I'm not superstitious that way (knock wood). Unfortunately, this is a typical Dean Koontz book - it starts off smoothly, gains momentum, takes off and gets moving at high speed, and just when you're enjoying the flight, it suddenly goes crazily off course, crashes and burns.

A crime reporter loses his wife and two daughters in a bizarre plane crash that kills everybody on board. A year later he's still in depression, but then he meets a woman who apparently survived the crash. He starts tracking her down, and relatives of the other victims suddenly start committing suicide under very strange circumstances. When he eventually finds her, things get even weirder, and we're back to secret labs, mad scientists and illegal experiments, mixed with cults, conspiracies and magic pictures.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts, but beware of the sudden stop.

Sensory chocolate...If I were blind, I'd want Koontz to be my eyes

I relished this book the way one would relish a good chocolate bar...reading and letting it soak into my soul. This is one of the few books I've read that actually draws you into the scenery. You don't know if it's the reality of the characters or Koontz's talented, yet subtle description of places and situations. When he's sitting on the beach, you can feel almost hear the waves and smell the sea salt. When he's on the run from dangerous people, you almost feel like you're there in the passenger seat beside him.

I finished this book, put it down and just said, "Wow..."

Is there life after death? That's the question this book tackles...and while the journey to this answer is spell-binding, I think we, the readers, wanted more elaboration into this question. If only Koontz knew all the answers!

I'm surprised at the negative reviews, but I can see why some wouldn't like this. Unfortunately, many Koontz readers aren't true lovers of his literary genius. Koontz books are usually prominently displayed in the grocery store's best-seller section...a convenient buy for readers not looking for a read from someone with enormous talent, but rather something that will entertain with a good plot but no supporting filler or depth.

If you're not a serious reader, but a poolside one, this might not be the book for you. The glory of Koontz's writing is in the details and the ending isn't written for the poolside crowd that want to see the impossible happen. There's no swell of trumpets and bringing back of the dead. The ending is tremendously satisfying, but I wish it was elaborated on with as much detail as the rest of the story.

To really "get" Koontz's writing, you have to have an open mind and leave aside skeptical opinions, as much of what he writes seems to be horror, sci-fi, supernatural, or suspense. You have to fully allow yourself to leave your own world or you will never be able to enjoy the tale as presented.

Nobody can deny that Koontz is a spectacular writer. I haven't read every single one of Koontz's novels and I'm glad I haven't. I think it dims your appreciation for a good novel when you read it because you spend all your time comparing it to every other work ever written by Koontz. When it comes to a good author, this can be like comparing your own children. If you have never read Koontz, definitely buy this book. If you have, try to clear your mind of who the author is and "open your heart" to this wonderful story.

Best GED Prep Book Around!

I got this book for my nephew who opted to take this test versus finishing his senior year of high school. He asked for my help with the math, but having been out of school for several years and not knowing specifically what type of math is on this test, I hoped to find a book with some specifics. I reviewed every section of this book and I was impressed with how well it organized the information and provided examples. I was grateful to receive this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
To start, this book has an excellent introduction. It explains what the GED test is, how the test is administered, what all the sections/topics are, how many questions are in each section and how much time is allotted for each section. They also explain how the test is scored. The Sections are as follows: Math, Reasoning through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. The last section of this book includes Practice tests for each section and answer keys; an added plus.

Glad we bought this book

I like how the book is broken down into sections for easier studying. I liked the hints about The most common mistakes for each section of the test.
Reading through this book with my sons who are preparing for the GED helped to settle the nervous of the unknown. Giving examples of the types of questions and a quick review on math problems was the most beneficial. My sons feel very confident about taking the GED now that they have read through this book and taken practice tests.

I've bought this as gifts for two people and it came quickly both times - earlier than it said it would.
As a person who's taken the GED, I'd say this is a solid book for general GED studying. It covers all of the subjects and the format is great.

A life lived well

This is a fascinating and wonderful book about the life of a living wisewoman. Cassandra tells us about her life and how she became a witch, and how it changed her life for the better. She has the courage to show us her early life and the physical and emotional hardship she lived through as a child. But she also shows us how that courage has led her to become a woman with practical knowledge and wisdom which has served her well.

I learned a lot about the life and practice of a true wisewoman and what being a witch really entails. It is far from the fluff and fantasy that is found in so many books out there, and it isn't something that is just a fad for the moment. It is a total way of life and thought that takes a lot of work and commitment. It also entails having a connection with one's community and a willingness to use the magic for others as well as for oneself.

Anyone who is interested in the old folk ways and in traditional witchcraft will find this book very interesting.

I do hope Cassandra will write another book, perhaps one for those who would like to learn about the craft but don't have access to a teacher. There is so much to learn and so little real information beyond the usual pop witchcraft books that flood the market.

The life and times of a village witch...

The first thing thing that grabbed me was the cover of the book: interesting imagery, vivid colors, the book cover material draws you into the world of what you're about to read about. The book itself- the author starts by sharing some early personal experiences which molded her and helped her become what she is and how comfortable she is being who she is. She explains her approach to working magick and how she does what she does. She gives you the benefit of her experience to show what worked for her, what didn't and why. She goes into what its like to be a village witch and the intricacies of that in the modern world. She writes well making the material interesting and is very personable.
She gives examples of what her work entails, the different kinds of jobs, the people she meets in the course of her work. There are some lovely illustrations in the book and some personal photos followed at the end of book by Cunning lore, some charms, some herb lore, rituals and chants. I was left wanting more and hoping that the author will go on to write another book.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Not what I expected, but powerful nonetheless!

Definitely a powerful story of triumph in the face of adversity. I didn't quite know what to expect when I purchased this book, but found myself incredibly curious upon seeing Cassandra Latham-Jones's name, being very fond of her. This book exists to answer the commonly asked question: "What lead you to become a Village Witch?" It answers this question and more. The book itself makes for a very invigorating and captivating, albeit a bit dry, read. Nevertheless, I finished it in a matter of about six hours. I couldn't put it down.

Another unputdownable novel by Sara King!

Sara King is some sort of freaky genius. It's like she can look into my brain and find all of the things I'm obsessed with, write a (long, amazing) book about them, AND promise me a sequel in 6-8 months. I've read and loved all five of her currently-published novels, but Outer Bounds has got to be the best so far. Here's why:

1.) The characters oh em gee the characters. All of them! Anna the seven-year-old sociopath and her "pet" robot, Magali the Killer, Runaway Joel, Milar and Tatiana...I could sit here all day debating with myself and not come up with a particular "favorite" character. This cast is a complex and diverse bunch with divided loyalties and priorities, and yet the relationships that they build over the course of the story and the gradually-revealed ties that bind them all together weave the story as a whole into a truly epic tapestry.

2.) The science part of this fiction is amazing. The world of Fortune is a bit like Herbert's Dune - a rather unpleasant place to be most of the time, cruelly mined for its sort of gross natural reserves, mixed with a bit of Firefly's space-western aesthetic. Populating this world are Nephyrs (augmented human soldiers who have had their skin and most of their humanity stripped away), operators and soldiers (humans who are literally wired into practically invincible battle-mechs), and "Yolk babies" like Anna, who are hyperintelligent if not particularly socially adept, kind of like the kids in the Enderverse.

3.) Sara King's writing continues to amaze me. The part where Tatiana is wired into her soldier had me cringing, one scene with Anna was definitely High Octane Nightmare Fuel, and there was one particular part toward the end that had me sniffling for the rest of the book. The aerial dogfights are brilliantly described and left me wishing that SOMEBODY would turn this series into a movie or TV show. When you read this, you'll feel like you're there on Fortune watching the bloody birth of a full-scale revolution.

Overall, I'd have to say this is one of my favorite reads of the year and I'm (as usual) dying to see where Sara King will take us next!

Sara King Belongs With the Greats

This is by far my favorite book by Sara King yet. That is saying a lot. Fortune's Rising had me at the edge of my seat and unable to put it down. I stayed awake until 4am to finish it...something which no book has made me giddy enough to do in many years. I was left in shock more than once when I thought "she wouldn't go there, she wouldn't... she went there!" But it turns out the events were totally integral to the book and perfectly executed. I wish I could give it 6 stars.

Sara King makes a big deal about being a character writer. It's important to her, and that makes a big difference in her books. Each character feels so real like they actually exist in this world that Sara placed them. Another reviewer compared the "Yolk babies" in this book to the kids in the Enderverse and I think that is spot on. Not copied from OSC - but as rich and varied and unique as the Ender characters in a very GOOD way. Each character has their own uberhuman skill or character trait that they must learn to use to their advantage. At the same time those traits create a void at the opposite end of the spectrum that they must learn to overcome.

The way the characters lives intertwine and the way that comes to light is simply brilliant, and leaves you with the feeling that there is so much more to discover. The dystopian world she creates is absolutely fascinating. As the book progresses, you can feel the tensions rising at the brink of a revolution that I'm sure will be equally gripping in the next installment of her Outer Bounds series.

I've read a lot of sci-fi... Like a LOT... And this book is just plain GOOD! And different for its genre. The closest thing I can relate it to is Firefly but without the Chinese influence. The kind of planet-side plain spoken folk rising up against the tech advanced space empire, with a nod to Dune and the spice (yoke) driven politics and slavery issues. Each of the characters are unique, from a 9 year old sociopath and her older sister desperate to outrun her prophesied moniker "killer" to a worn out smuggler, and night and day twins. The story jumps around a bit and you meet all the characters without knowing their connections and then get to see events unfold and put things together. Also every single one of the characters change which I LOVE! One commenter mentioned he disliked the little boy being thrown off a cliff and the rape situation.. Which if you don't want to even read about the concept of death then don't read this book (or most other sci-fi.. Drama.. Fantasy.. Well you know, keep to to kids books) however the scenes mentioned were, remarkably, tastefully done in that it was not graphic gore (blood squirting etc) and it focused on the psychological mind games the character had to endure and what that does to the psyche. I will definitely be getting the next book and am so glad I discovered this author who writes so prodigiously I apparently won't have to wait more than a few months for the next installment.
